>> Legendary Los Angeles Hiker Sam Kim Found Dead Near Mountain He Summited Almost Every Day

Mt. Baldy is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, looming 10,064 feet above Los Angeles. If you hiked Baldy over the past few years, chances are you probably ran into Seuk Doo “Sam” Kim.

The 78-year-old summited the peak over 700 times, and was on track to break 1,000 ascents later this year. At one point, he climbed Baldy every day for over 100 days in a row. He became a cult figure for those who frequented the trail, as he insisted on talking to passers-by, giving them some of his food, and posing for pictures. Many hikers have stories of Kim showing up in the middle of the night and sharing a meal or a story with them. Baldy isn’t an imposing or difficult mountain to hike up, but summiting any peak 100 days in a row is a notable feat for a septuagenarian.

Tragically, Kim died on the mountain this week. Kim was reported missing by his family after he left to hike up the mountain on Friday, and authorities found his body about 2,000 feet below the summit yesterday afternoon.

Access denied

Hikers, bikers and equestrians who attempt to navigate the Newton and Castro Motorway fire road loop off the Backbone Trail in the Upper Solstice Canyon area of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area will have to either turn around or risk trespassing. That is because the loop is partially inaccessible to the public due to two large metal gates erected by a private property owner.

This has disappointed, and angered, some hikers. But the property owner says ill-equipped hikers bothering a caretaker on the land, and other problems caused him to put up the gates.

The land associated with the popular loop is public property with the exception of two short distances where there are in-holdings, owned by James A. Kay Jr., that cover the road. The 850 feet of blocked trail crosses the rectangular-shaped private parcel, which is oriented north/south. The north end of the property holds a series of commercial two-way radio towers on Castro Peak. Known on hiking, equestrian and mountain biking blogs as "the gate," the 10- to 12-foot fortified barrier is surrounded by razor wire along the uphill and downhill sides, security cameras and signs that read "Attack Dogs," "Road Closed" and "What Part of No Trespassing Don't You Understand?" The second property that is inaccessible is located where Newton and Castro Motorway intersect, and is blocked with a post and chain gate.

According to the National Park Service, prior to Kay's acquisition in 2002, the six-mile route was unobstructed. Kay originally installed swing gates to prevent trespassing and to protect his private property, however, the public continued to go around the gates without any consequences.

"We have a communications facility up at the top with a caretaker on the premises and we get ill-equipped hikers and bikers that need first-aid, water, a bathroom or directions and it drives the caretaker crazy," Kay said.

Three runners will chase the barrier in Italy between May 6 and 8.

On May 6, exactly 63 years to the day after Roger Bannister became the first person to run a sub-4:00 mile, three runners might attempt to run the first sub-two-hour marathon. Or they might not.

That’s because Nike’s Breaking2 project, which features star runners Eliud Kipchoge, Zersenay Tadese, and Lelisa Desisa, is penciling in a three-day launch window to ensure they run in ideal weather conditions. The attempt will take place at the Formula One track in Monza, Italy, with May 6 as the first choice and May 7 and 8 as back-up dates.

The race will be streamed live around the world, with a broadcast hosted by veteran sports journalist Sal Masekela and additional commentary from NBC analyst and Nike executive Craig Masback and others. Details of how to access the stream haven’t yet been released.

The use of a flexible starting date is unconventional, but it’s one of the key advantages gained by staging a stand-alone time trial instead of going for the record in an existing big-city race. It’s the same approach, for example, that cyclist Eddie Merckx used in his famous one-hour record in 1972, which was set at an open-air velodrome in Mexico City.

If history is a guide, early May in Monza should offer relatively cool conditions with an average low of about 54 F, along with low humidity, little wind, and cloud cover. Still, getting all those things to line up on the same day isn’t easy; the Breaking2 team’s half marathon dress rehearsal on March 7, for example, faced unexpectedly strong winds—though, as if to confirm the launch-window theory, conditions were once again perfect the next morning.

As women’s running pioneer Kathrine Switzer prepares to run the Boston Marathon 50 years after her debut, her husband has a front-row view of her work as an athlete and advocate.

Kathrine Switzer and Roger Robinson met in 1983, as speakers at the Canberra Marathon, Australia. He had written about the emergence of the women’s marathon and knew her name as sixth-fastest in the world in 1975, and more vaguely about her 1967 Boston Marathon encounter with Jock Semple. She knew his name only as a top masters runner, not his writing, university work, or TV commentary. They were married in 1987 and divide their time between New Paltz, New York, and Wellington, New Zealand.

The 261 Fearless Foundation is a global nonprofit that unites and empowers women through running, honoring the bib number 261 that Switzer wore in 1967. On April 17, by arrangement with the BAA, 121 runners will run as the 261 Fearless Boston Marathon team.

Robinson shares excerpts from his journal from the weeks leading up to Switzer’s 50th anniversary run at Boston.

Two years ago, plus-size model Candice Huffine, 32, felt intimidated by running.

“I had a lot of fear and doubt,” said the Brooklyn-based model who will be on Elle magazine’s June cover. “I was active in other ways, but running was something I’d always avoided. I was literally scared.”

When Huffine looked at images of runners in magazines and on Instagram, she did not see body types that represented her own. The stereotypical lean runner made her feel like the sport wasn’t for her.

But this Monday she will run the Boston Marathon (her first 26.2) as part of Hyland’s all-female team. And four half marathons and a full marathon training cycle later, she’s working to make running more inclusive to women who might feel underrepresented in the fitness community.

If you aren’t ready to tackle 26.2 miles, this “marathon” is a very slow step in the right direction.

The cast of Baywatch the movie, including Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson and Zac Efron, are hosting the first ever Baywatch Slow Motion Marathon on April 22.

Yes, you heard us right—the .2K is to be run entirely in slow motion. Whatever you think you know about training won’t apply to this unique race. The winner is the “slowest and sexiest person” to cross the finish line.

That slow and sexy athlete will win the race and a ticket to the world premiere of Baywatch. We’re not really sure why they are calling it a marathon—but we’ll let that terrible use of running lingo slide since, well, we don’t want to upset The Rock.

The contest entry period will begin at 9:00 a.m. at L.A. Live, and will close at 10:30 a.m. The slow-motion race is first-come, first-serve and the maximum number of participants is 1,000.

Pat McGregor, assistant track coach at Samford University, is trying to go at least one day longer than the streak his high school coach established in 1979.

Although his competitive running career is behind him, Patrick McGregor, 26, is again hitting the track regularly. Daily, in fact.

Once during every 24-hour period, no matter where he is, the assistant track coach at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, finds a track and puts himself through the test of running a sub-5:00 mile.

It’s a habit McGregor started on January 2, and he’s zeroing in on his initial goal of 105 straight days. Should he do so, he will eclipse the achievement of his high school coach, Devon Hind. Provided all goes well, McGregor will better Hind’s record on Sunday, April 16.

As I slogged through the Marine Corps Marathon course in 2000, that’s what I kept hearing. It was my mom cheering for me throughout the race. I was 23 and had signed up almost on a lark, but was delighted by the energy and fun. It wasn’t just once that I heard her shouting out to me either—she managed to stake out five prime spots along the course so she could wave me on and feed me orange slices to keep me going. That day, like all those that came before, she was my biggest supporter.

Just a little over three years later, she was gone, murdered in her home by a serial killer whom it would take 12 years to find, and to bring to justice. I was 26 years old. In those cold, early months, running changed. I ran to find some calm, to shape my pain, to settle the voices that told me this brutal, dark experience might define me—might steal my joy. I ran to fight back.

The worst part of drinking a glass of olive oil is not the taste. It’s the consistency, how tenaciously the stuff clings to your throat. Your favorite running shoe may not look like your neighbor’s all that much longer. Shoe manufacturers are putting focus far beyond the glue and stitching in sneaker construction to create customizable footwear that molds to every individual runner.

Using “selective laser sintering,” a 3D-printing process that constructs components of a shoe one layer at a time, rather than the traditional model of cutting or injecting foam, companies can engineer the structure of a shoe—starting with the outsole and moving into the midsole—to create unique models from the ground up. It also allows them to dial in a custom fit more quickly, because they can tweak a prototype in a matter of hours, rather than the months-long process of building and shipping shoes from factories in Asia. Nike used the method to speed up production of prototypes in order to go through several dozens of iterations of track spikes for elite athletes such as Allyson Felix, as she was preparing for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

When will runners be able to slip their feet into custom-built shoes, made to fit the curves of their feet and their unique biomechanical needs? For now, the major players are tight-lipped on specifics, but all indicators suggest we’ll see more options from more brands this year—customized footwear for individual runners, not just elites.

I have no time goal at the Big Sur International Marathon, and I can’t wait.

I won’t PR at my next marathon.

I’m writing this after the hardest interval workout of my training cycle. It was one of those workouts where you’re too tired to wipe the strings of spittle off the edge of your mouth, the kind that keels you over after the last set and makes you question what kind of shape you’re really in.

I won’t PR in my next marathon, but not because my training went badly, because I’m injured, or even because I just had a demoralizing speed session (though this is true). I’m not going to PR because I’ve decided not to worry about it. And I am so excited about that.

On April 30, I will run the Big Sur International Marathon. It will be my seventh marathon. In each of the previous races, I’ve managed to run a better time. It’s something I’m proud of. It means that each year I have improved—a goal that I strive for in running as well as in life.

So why not attempt a faster time this year?

Name-checked by Kanye, and a hangout of American celebs, I went down to my local London branch to see whether it's worth all that cold hard cash.

I'm in the mid-morning "Best Butt Ever" class at South Kensington's Equinox gym, being shouted at by Hugo Diaz, who is the human equivalent of a neon-pink slogan tank-top. "Enjoy the pain; you are paying for it," he yells at me and about 20 other women as we curl over doing hip thrusts.

The Equinox in Beverly Hills has always had a pretty swollen celebrity clientele. It's where Lindsay Lohan opted to train after rehab, and on any given day one can spot Paris Hilton, Khloe Kardashian or Ashley Tisdale tumbling into 4x4s after Cardio Pump or Vinyasa Yoga sessions.

However, it wasn't until Kanye West uttered: "I need every bad bitch up in Equinox / Wanna know right now if you a freak or not" in Life of Pablo track "Highlights" that the workout brand fully entered the pop culture canon, just like eight-minute abs and SoulCycle before it.
